The secret to a successful start: Why Project Learning Is More Important Than Dry Theory

Purpose: Explain the approach to teaching at VSTU. Today, any theory can be found on the Internet in a few minutes. Then why do we need a university? The answer lies in one word: experience. The Department of PAS VolgSTU relies on project-based learning, because it turns the theorist into a sought-after engineer. What is project learning? This is a transition from the classical scheme “listened to the lecture – passed the test” to the scheme “get the problem – created the solution”. Knowledge is not given for the future; it is acquired in the process of solving a specific engineering problem. Why does it work? Knowledge integration: In the real world, there are no “Database” or “Web Design” tasks. To run an application, you need to link the database, server, interface and security together. The design approach teaches us to see the whole system. The best way to understand why architecture is bad is to write it, try to scale and fail. At university, the cost of error is minimal. Students get the opportunity to break the project, analyze flaws and rewrite it correctly under the supervision of mentors. Portfolio from the first year: By the time of graduation, the student has not just a diploma with grades, but a repository on GitHub with real projects (from Telegram bots to CRM systems and marketplaces) that can be shown to the employer. A graduate who has gone through team projects is not afraid of real business challenges. He already knows how to plan sprints, how to merge branches into Git without conflicts and how to present the product to the customer. This is the bridge that helps our students to receive offers from IT companies before graduating.
